I have a constipated platy, I think. So far she swims and acts ok, but I haven't seen her poo in awhile. She is the only adult fish in the tank, so I feed her granules one at a time. She still has a hearty appetite, but I may be overfeeding at a single feeding since I only feed once a day. Anyway, I looked in the cupboard and all we have is canned sweet peas. Would this be ok to cook and feed? Or we have a bag of frozen mixed vegetables which I can pick the peas from. Which is better?
My fish is constipated?
Either one of those will work. If you use the canned peas you don't need to cook them. Just pick out a pea and squeeze it out of the peel and feed her a tiny bit of the mushy inside. If you use the frozen peas, take one out of the bag, cook it, let it cool and then do the same thing - squeeze it until the mushy insides squirt out of the peel and then give her a little bit of the mushed up inside of it. Don't feed her too much or you'll make a mess of your tank water.
For the zucchini, the easiest way I found to sink it was just to get a nice sized flat rock and then stick a slice of zucchini on top of it and wrap a rubber band around the whole thing and drop it in. The rock sinks down to the bottom and the fish pick at the zucchini on top of the rock. When the zucchini is gone I just fish out the rock and rubber band with a net to use the next time.
Reply:just to add to the comments -- chop up the frozen pea after you boil it a couple minutes -- for the zucchini i cut it in thin strips like spaghetti and boil it for a minute and it sinks. fish seem to like the middle part and not so much the outside so you can give them the middle and save the outsides for your dinner (stir-fryed with some olive oil and fresh basil -- yum -- put it on top of pasta and its a meal).
a turkey baster is a great way to suck uneaten food out of your tank.
Reply:Canned peas tend to have preservatives in them which isn't great for your fish. I'd go for the frozen ones instead.
Reply:Try epson salt, put a little bit on a spoon and bring the fish up to it, when gape their mouths, try and make them eat a little of the diluted salt. This happened to me and the vet suggested to try this and it worked! I hope it helps!
