My new puppy (jack russell)...poor dog choice...jumped in my guinea pigs cage and chased the poor thing around. Sweet Pea (the guinea pig) was squealing really loud. She has no injuries, except for some hair loss, but I have heard of guinea pigs dying of shock after being scared. What should I do? It happened this morning and she has been o.k. all day, just doing normal things (eating, sleeping, etc.). The only difference I noticed is that she doesn't squeak as much when I walk in to feed her. She doesn't seem as excited as she used to! HELP! Please, does anyone have some advice!
My guinea pig was harassed by my puppy!!!?
She should be ok. Monitor for the next few days, any changes should be considered as serious and a trip to the vet may be needed. Make sure that she eats and drinks, check that she is still weeing and that there are fecal pellets in her cage, this should insure that everything is still running smoothly. Pick her up and gently pat all over her body, if she squeals she may have broken something or there could be internal damage. I doubt that she would die of shock, she could stop eating and drinking and die that way but I do not think shock could kill her.
Move the cage to a higher level or block the room off where you are keeping Sweat pea so that your puppy can not get to her.
She probably is in shock thus why she is not so excited. If you are really worried a trip to an exotic vet will not hurt.
Reply:She is doing great...everything is back to normal...thanks everyone! Report It
Reply:Well, I'm going to get a hamster, so I've been reading hamster books. And yes, Sweet Pea may be in a state of shock and could die (sadly), but if she's keeping up her normal routine, she's probably fine. Just observe her for the next few days, and don't leave your dog alone with your hamster.
P.S. Your puppy may have just wanted to play with your hamster, so please don't get mad!
Reply:Oh, how scary! Poor little piggie!
As long as your piggie doesn't have any injuries, she should be okay. She's probably very traumatized right now.
Give her some time %26amp; during the meantime, get a lid or something to put on your cage to keep the puppy out.
Reply:She's probably fine. Especially if she acted normal today. Just keep an eyer on her. Also, dog proof her cage so it can't happen again. You and your piggy are very lucky!!
Reply:Don't be mad at your dog...... its natural but as for your guenia pig it could just be calming down for no reason. it seems fine but keep your dog far away from it to avoid more shock spend lots of time with it so that it knows nothing will hurt it, make sure that your pet is happy and if it is shy then show it pictures of your dog so that it can get used to it, having more than one pet can be hard but love both equal.
Reply:guinea's have very weak hearts. they have been known to have heart attacks so i'd try to keep the jack russell away from the pig. maybe it'll be ok, good luck
Reply:Have you considered youth-in-Asia?

Reply:She's scared or stressed. Start petting her A LOT for the next week. Make her feel especially comfortable to relieve her stress. Do things she likes. Like give her the toys she likes, give her a bit more of the food she enjoys, spend more time with her, etc.
