he had started scooting his butt around the floor a couple weeks ago and ended up with scabbs so i didn't worry i just doctored them. but this morning i woke up and relized there is dropps of blood on the carpet and then relize it is coming from his butt. i examined him and noticed a hole next to his anus a little bigger than a sweet pea. it is bleeding not bad just a little bit. i'm gonna take him to the vet tomorrow morning but does anyone know what this might be and what the vet might do to help this. i don't have alot of money so will this be really expensive!

YIKES! Your dog has an abscessed anal gland!!!

This may or may not require surgery (sedation, flushing and possible sutures), depending on the size and the severity of the abscess. Expect to go home with atleast good round of antibiotics!!!

For precautionary reasons, I would NOT allow your dog to eat or drink after midnight tonight... just incase he needs to go under!
Reply:Please take him to the Vet.He could have cancer of the Prostate!Or it could just be irritated Glands either way an oozing open wound sounds very serious. Also it must be painful for him.Do not go into the Vet proclaiming to have no money ,at least wait until he treats him. Most Vets will let you pay some at a time and bill you.The only thing you can do is keep him comfortable until you get him to the Vet.Maybe you should confine him to one area to prevent contamination all over your home.Doggy Diapers don't work on alert grown Dogs ,they just spend all their Time ripping them off!!!It is hard to treat the anal area with much success.maybe the Dr.can close up the fistula.God bless You and Good Luck wish I had something magic to tell you.
Reply:Well it could be a sign that the dog has worms or some form of parasite..it's good you are taking him to the vet..he needs to go very badly!!!
Reply:His anal gland are full. you shouldn't have to pay to much. the scabs and hole are just from his scraping it against the ground.
Reply:as long as he is going to be OK it should not matter about the cost if you had taken him when this first started it probably would of been cheaper but everyone leaves it till it gets worse then worries about how much its going to cost
Reply:I had a pomeranian with the same problem. The doctor said it was a bleeding tumor and removed it. Did not have any problems after that.
Reply:Anal gland impaction. It is impacted and infected and is now a abscess with probably a fistula into the anus, hence the blood. Ouch!

You HAVE to go to the vet and get it drained and packed. (they usually pack it with antibiotic stuff, so it can be a little leaky, have towels ready, lol!) Thank you for taking him in tomorrow. When this stuff comes out it can look like a big, long grey snake... ick, probably tmi, lol!

Be sure to not feed him after 8 pm and no water after 11 pm, just in case sedation is needed. (it usually is because of the pain).

Ask to be shown how to empty the anal sacs so you can do it yourself from now on. It needs to be done probably once a month from now on, so pay attention when they show you! (Doing this yourself will save you about 15.00 per month!)
Reply:Wow talk about small world! Lately I have been noticing that my dog has been scooting alot but it didn't really occur to me at first. A few days ago, I noticed a bloody little patch near my pomeranian's anal area. I washed it and noticed a little raw cut near the anal area. The next day I decided to take my little pom to the vet and they checked her out and determined that she had a "Ruptured Anal Gland." Apparently, her gland(s) were full but I couldn't notice them because shes really furry and has alot of fur on her behind. They also said that this problem is more common in smaller dogs so its very possible our doggies share the same thing. We should totally have each others support lol But yeah thats my opinion...
Reply:Tell the vet your problem and ask for help.............the glad might be infected and you can give the medicine yourself. Remember this can happen again so learn how to help your pet.......C
Reply:could be something wrong w/ his anal glands, and then he got a hot spot, and now thats infected. im glad your taking him to the vet tom, b/c that area is very contaminated and germs spread fast
Reply:Typically if a small dog is rubbing his bottom on the floor this indicates that he/she needs their anal glands expressed.

Big dogs can express their glands by themselves, however little dogs cannot.

Anal gland expression is very simple and most grooming places can do it. What they do is stick a finger inside the anus and feel for the gland (typically right under the anus) and squeeze it, releasing stuck up poo fluids.

as for the sore it should be fine but youll have to clean it out multiple times during the day since its so close to the anus and it might get infected when your pooch goes potty. It shoudlnt be expiensive. In fact you might not have to go to the vet. unless the wound is a puncture wound and looks like it might need stitches.
Reply:It was a abscessed anal gland, know it's a ruptured anal glad. He'll most likely have to stay a while, get a bit of sedation, flush out the infection god home on ointment and antibiotics. Depends on how bad could be a simple wipe down and meds sent home. But in most all cases it's a sedation. Best of luck next time they scout that means the anal glands are full and need to be expressed your vet will go over this with you.

Expense depends on your area here in my area and the vets I worked for was about 100 bucks for a dog his size, sometimes a bit less. Ask your vet BEFORE anything is done for a estimate and go from there most all will hold a check for a couple wks on part of it, at least try to have the office call covered. In the mean time over night if he'll let you keep the area clean you can use baby wipes, but this is usally very pain full and they won't let you.

Also like Vet Tech said just in case no food or water after midnigt not even treats in the morn.
